THE WORLD OF SMALL SCALE SHIP MODELS

Small scale ship modeling (1/1200 scale and smaller) has its own unique story.  Unlike larger scale models that originated as builders' design aids, small scale models were first used to train naval officers in battle tactics and ship identification. Consequently, these two branches of modeling evolved along different lines.  While large scale modeling focuses on single ships as individual works of art crafted down to the smallest detail, small scale tends to focus on the collective appeal of multiple ships grouped together as collections.  Large scale models have acquired a strong appeal with a public accustomed to seeing them as centerpieces in museum displays and hobby stores, but small scale modeling and collecting has remained a niche hobby largely unappreciated by those unacquainted with it.

To help bring this hobby more into the public spotlight, our exhibit will showcase the evolution and production of today's miniature ship models.  We intend to show a representative selection of models from various dates and manufacturers to depict the evolution of the modelers' art over the years, along with step-by-step examples of models in the production process.  In doing so, we hope to illustrate this story in a way that will enlighten both the seasoned collector and the public alike.

Anyone wishing to bring or loan vintage models for this exhibit is invited to contact either John Olsen or Ulrich Rudofsky to discuss details.

Those individuals and dealers wishing to bring models (both current production and second-hand) for sale should contact John Olsen.
