We have been fortunate to have Josh Smith, curator of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Museum offer us the use of its facilities at King's Point, NY.  As anyone who has visited the Museum knows, it is one of the most outstanding maritime museums in the U.S. if not the world, and has on display two rare complete 1/1250 scale collections of Noordzee and Heinrich models once owned by the late Frederik Menschaar.

Also to be seen is the newly updated "Convoy!" exhibit, to which several SMSC collectors contributed, and the current exhibit featuring the Liberty Ships of WWII.

There is no charge for the event.  The Museum will open at 9:00 AM on October 6 for setup  All are invited to bring models, dioramas, books, post cards, etc. for display, sale or trade.  Or just drop in to browse and chat!  Tables will be available free of charge-  let me know if you need one (e-mail
neslo1250@gmail.com).   Streetside parking is usually available near the museum, but not on the grounds.

The show will run from 10:00AM to around 2:00PM, with a short business meeting afterward to elect officers and board members.  Anyone interested in volunteering their services for a 2-year stint, please e-mail
neslo1250@gmail.com .  No heavy lifting involved!

Josh Smith will be on hand throughout the day to conduct tours of the museum's exhibits and answer questions.

                                                                                                       *  *  *

The meeting will conclude at 2:30 PM with a social hour featuring a catered barbecue in the Museum's conservatory adjacent to the main exhibit hall.  Menu selections include BBQ ribs, chicken, Italian sausage, corn on the cob, green salad, pasta salad and fresh fruit along with soft drinks and water.  Cost is $28.00 per person, payable in advance by check.  Again, please e-mail neslo1250@gmail.com to make arrangements.

                                                                                                           *  *  *

Anyone planning to attend is urged to contact me directly so that I can have a list of attendees for the security guard (yes, this is a U.S. service academy and we are in a post 9/11 world).  Please bring a U.S. Government ID (driver's license or passport OK) in case the security guard asks to see it.

Watch the 1250scale message board for periodic updates!

KASSEL "SAMMLERTREFFEN" 2019

Picture
25 May, 2019
The 19th biannual "world meeting" of 1/1250 scale collectors will be held at the Philipp-Scheidemann-Haus on Holländische Straße No. 74 opposite the central cemetery at Kassel, Germany.

This is primarily a buying/selling event.  You enter the main hall on the second floor, where you'll find all the major dealers and producers at their tables with their latest model releases and maybe a few "sondermodelle" produced in limited quantities for the occasion.  This is the time to buy the newest models, ask your questions, and maybe lobby for a favorite ship that has not yet been produced.  Off of the main hall there are a number of smaller rooms where individual collectors can be found selling second-hand models.  Here is where to find the long sought-after missing links in your collection.  Prices are reasonable, but be prepared to spend some time examining the offerings, and bring plenty of CASH!  Credit cards are accepted only by two or three of the biggest commercial dealers there, so don't get caught short!

Sellers begin arriving around 8:00 AM and the public is admitted at 10:00.  There is a small admission charge of 2.50 Euros.  The event usually wraps up around 4:00 PM, but some of the sellers may start packing up a bit earlier if business begins to slow down.

PAST COLLECTORS MEETINGS

Miniature ship collecting acquired such a great following in Europe that it was naturally here, mainly in the larger German cities, that the first collecting clubs were organized.    In the 1990's European collectors began meeting every other year at Kassel, the geographic center of the newly reunited Germany, and from that time on, the Kassel "Sammlertreffen" became the main event for small ship collectors the world over. Collectors meetings in the United States began with an informal gathering at Paul Jacobs' house in Saratoga, CA in 2003.  The following year (May, 2004), Tom Haughton organized the first East Coast Collectors Meeting at his alma mater, the State University of New York's Maritime College at Fort Schuyler, NY.  Participants stayed overnight in the cadet dorms and met for a day of programs, lectures and discussions followed by another day of model sales, exhibits and socializing by collectors, many of whom were meeting each other face to face for the first time.  Tours of the Fort Schuyler museum, visits to Manhattan, Fleet Week activities, a banquet and lots of socializing filled out the weekend. The East Coast 2004 meeting set the pattern for the next two meetings held in 2005 and 2006 at SUNY Maritime.  In 2007, Paul Jacobs and Chris Daley secured the Liberty Ship Jeremiah O'Brien at San Francisco as a venue for the first public West Coast meeting.  The fourth East Coast meeting in May, 2008, was the last held at SUNY Maritime.  Tom Haughton's untimely passing the following year ended our "alumnus connection" with the school and opened the door to future East Coast meetings in other locations, alternating with West Coast meetings in Kassel years.  The next West Coast meeting was accordingly scheduled for April, 2009, at the Monterey Maritime Museum, and here the SMSC held its first annual meeting.  In May, 2010, collectors met at the USS Constitution Museum and the Constitution Inn for the fifth East Coast meeting, the first outside SUNY Maritime, and in September, 2013, the first midwest U.S. meeting was held in Chicago.  Future U.S. collectors meetings will rotate annually across the three major geographical regions (East, Midwest/South, West).  Their future success depends largely on the organization of local and regional SMSC chapters and their willingness to assume the task of sponsoring these events.

Norfolk 2015

September, 2015, saw collectors from the East Coast and beyond gather at Norfolk, VA, for a weekend of events that culminated in the East Coast Collectors Meeting at the Courtyard Marriott on September 19.   A visit to the Mariners' Museum, a tour of the Norfolk Naval Base, the annual Air Show at Oceana Naval Air Station and the Welcome Dinner at Shula's 347 Grill were among the major highlights of the well-attended model show.  (Photos by Charles Jones, Bill Werner, Ulrich Rudofsky and John Olsen)

San Diego 2014

The 2014 West Coast Meeting at San Diego had the unique distinction of combining  a trip to Hawaii along with the numerous other  attractions and experiences offered by its host city.   The meeting was held on Saturday, September 6, 2014, at the Wyndham San Diego Bayside Hotel overlooking the harbor and just steps from USS Midway and the Maritime Museum.  Side trips to the Navy Yard,  the Hotel del Coronado, and tours of the CVN USS Ronald Reagan, USS Howard, and the Scripps research vessel "FLIP" were  among the highlights.  The Hawaii trip featured the "Admiral's Cruise of Pearl Harbor with a stop at the USS Arizona Memorial, a tour of the Ford Island Naval Air Museum and USS Missouri, a visit to Schoefield Barracks and the remains of the "Arizona Battery", and a look at the rich cultural and natural history of the islands, plus ample time for shopping, sightseeing and dining.  All agreed group leader Harald Scheel outdid himself this time!

Chicago 2013

The first Midwest Collectors meeting was held in Chicago on Saturday, September 28, 2013, on board the Columbia Yacht Club's MV Abegweit.   Many area collectors were able to meet each other for the first time beneath the tent on the fantail of the former Nova Scotia icebreaking ferry built in 1947.  Others visiting from the east and west coasts and abroad also enjoyed the hospitality and sights of America's "Second City", which all agreed were second to none!

Kassel 2013

The 16th biannual "Sammlertreffen" was held at Kassel's Philipp-Scheidemann-Haus on May 25, 2013.  The meeting was well-attended, though not as many second-hand models were available as in previous years and several familiar faces were missing.  Still, those who came had a wide range of both new and second-hand models to choose from, as well as many books, artwork and one-of-a-kind items that can only be found at Kassel.

Joining us for the first time from Japan were Atsuko (left) and Teruo Higasaguchi, who made this meeting an extra special one. Teruo's interest is in the transitional steam/iron fleets of the 19th century, particularly the Japanese. Besides collecting, he is a talented scratch builder and has made his own models of all of the ships in the early Meiji fleet. He has also assisted H&B producer Juergen Streich in the research that has led to his latest model, the auxiliary cruiser Shinano Maru. Teruo also made several souvenir fans for our meeting, which some of you may have noticed:

Many SMSC members were in attendance, including a group of seven led by Harald Scheel, who made an extensive tour of various maritime sites in Germany and the Netherlands. Other collectors and their family members joined the group from time to time as travel plans allowed. The following account by Harald is compiled from his posts on the 1250scale site.

*****************************************************************************************************************
Wednesday, May 25 was the first day of our tour. We had a great start. First stop: Navis / Neptun.  Our hosts Rudi and Egbert Kraus showed us the entire production, which is being accomplished in a relative small space. The showroom with the model display is very nice and spacious.
The group relaxes in the Navis-Neptun reception room.

From there, we went to Lilo & Peter Wiedling. Grünwald, Munich is a beautiful area with nice houses. The Wiedling villa fits right in. But the basement is the important area for us: model storage, packing, shipping and a spectacular model display. My pictures cannot reproduce this beautiful environment:

Dr. Hjalmar Heinen was instrumental in planning our schedule for Munich. After our lunch at Wiedling's, he took us for a tour of three churches and cloisters in the area- you will see from the pictures how impressive all three are.

In the evening, a few people of the Munich Club came to our hotel for a casual get together and dinner.

                                                  *  *  *

What a great day, what a great start for our tour. I would like to thank everyone for their hospitality, time and help. To summarize a discussion I had with Peter Wiedling: our hobby has so many nice people. It's not only the beautiful models, it's the camaraderie of an exceptional group of collectors.

******************************************************************************************************************

We started our Thursday (May 26) in Schwab München: the studio of Rodkling--Roland Klinger. In addition to the very elaborate ship dioramas, Roland is also an artist that paints beautiful ship pictures, as well as portraits and flowers.

Roland Klinger (L) with the group, which now included Hjalmar Heinen and Klaus Grams (on right).  Below: some of Roland's dioramas and the RODKLING hammerhead crane.

Roland Klinger is also involved with the history of Augsburg, especially the Fuggers and the Welser families. We visited a Mercateum (map museum) in the shape of a globe (left).

Our last stop of the day was totally unrelated to ship models: Würzburg, a Franken Wein tour: 10 people, 14 bottles of wine (below).

Friday/Saturday (May 27/28):  Since this was my first visit to Kassel, I cannot make any comparisons. But Kassel and 1250 is huge. One big room for the manufacturers, and 3 rooms for the second hand dealers.

A few manufacturing friends commented that overall attendance was down, but business was even to slightly up. They also noticed more younger buyers. I hope that this is not only wishful thinking.

Breakfast at the Schaefferberg:  the Group is joined by Paul & Renee Jacobs, Martina Maertins, Tom Vargas, Egbert Kraus, Hjalmar Heinen, and Peter & Hilde Krtina (right).

After a leisurely breakfast, we left Kassel on Sunday (May 29) morning and drove to Hamburg. Sunday afternoon, we visited the Schulauer Fährhaus, where all the passing ships entering or leaving Hamburg are greeted by the National Anthem of the registry of the ship. The greeting captain also announces technical details about the ship. My friend since 2. grade, Eckart Bolte, had arranged to be the greeting captain that Sunday. Therefore, we all got a special tour of the greeting station, and for the first time ever, some of his announcements were made in English for our group.  Eckart used to manufacture cruise ships and ferries under the Holsatia name. Unfortunately, he has discontinued this production.

On Monday (May 30) morning, we went to the Miniature Wunderland--it's truly a wonderland of very realistic and detailed railroad displays. The newest addition is a fully functional airport.

After a 2 hour city bus tour in an open double decker bus, we proceeded to Galerie Maritim, Fuchs and Wede. Fuchs is discontinuing the sale of 1250 models--some of us got a few great bargains.

Arrival at Galerie Maritim  (left);  lost in shipland (below).

In Hamburg, our group of 7 had grown to 22.  Manuela & Carlo Marquardt were extremely helpful in planning and executing our Hamburg visit.  I would like to thank them again for all their valuable help and advice.
Dinner on Monday was at the Johann Albrecht Brauhaus, truly enjoyed by everyone.

Tuesday (May 31) Our Hamburg hosts, Manuela & Carlo Marquart (CM) had recommended to get to the Maritime Museum as early as possible: it opens at 10:00AM. In Hamburg, our group had grown to 20, so we needed several cars in addition to our 9 seat transporter. Parking was OK, despite construction going on in the area.

For us 1250 fans, the 9th deck is the most important. More than 30000 1250 models are displayed. At times, it is overwhelming.

Paul with his new book.
Picture
Our host and tour guide, Carlo Marquart, has created an excellent display of how a 1250 model is produced, from the first idea, photos, plans to the creation of a detailed master. This master is transformed into a rubber/silicone mould, into which the liquid, hot metal is poured. Carlo's display shows in exact detail all the steps necessary to clean the casted model, add more details and finally prime and paint.

Picture
This display alone is worth a visit to the Maritime Museum. But, of course, there is much more. This is the most comprehensive collection of 1250 models anywhere in the world. We had scheduled approx 5 hours for the museum, with a 1/2 hour break in between. Quite a few members of our group spent most of this time on the 9th deck.

From my pictures, you can see that with the expert guidance from Carlo, I tried to cover as much of the other floors as possible. If you want to see most of it, you will need several days. Therefore, a return visit will be important.

Picture
After the museum visit, we did the Hamburg Harbor Tour. Because of some rain, we selected a larger, covered tour boat. During the boat ride, the rain disappeared, and we were able to see a lot, as my pictures will prove.

I would like to thank Manuela, Jessica & Carlo Marquart for helping with the planning and execution of the Hamburg portion of our group tour. Their expertize and willingness to spend all 3 days together with us in Hamburg, right after the long days of Kassel, made our Hamburg visit nothing short of perfect.

**************************************************************************************************

After our 3 fantastic days in Hamburg, we got an early start on Wednesday, June 1 for a fully scheduled day.
About 9:00AM, we pulled into the yard of the Möwen Verlag (Wilhelmshavener Modellbaubogen). In the early 60's, our group of navy friends had gotten it's start by building these paper ships in 1:250, and developed a navy game using these big ships, later to be replaced by the 1250's from Wiking, Eagle, Hansa & Delphin.  The owner of the Möwen Verlag, Siegfried Wolter, greeted us with welcome coffee (German & American), tea and those good German wafer cookies.
Picture Museum ship Moelders.
After our coffee break, and selecting a few projects for the future, we drove to the Wilhelmshaven ship museum, displaying the Mölders, Weilheim and U10. Unfortunately, our tight schedule did not allow for much time to explore these museum ships (right).

At 2:45PM, we had to be in Papenburg for an English guided tour of the Meyer Werft (Ship Yard). In approaching Papenburg, we could see from a distance the almost finished Celebrity SILHOUETTE (below right), one of the largest cruise ships ever built in this ship yard, which is 60 miles inland, along the river Ems. From here, the newly built ships have to "ride through the meadows" to reach the North Sea.

On our tour, we learned that the ship yard has enough orders through the end of 2015 (below).

Picture
Our journey went on to Peter's (Chudziak) and my home town: Lingen, just 45 minutes south of Papenburg.
Peter had organized a 40 minute boat ride to a restaurant at the waterfalls--yes, there is a waterfall in Lingen. We enjoyed a German Spargel (white asparagus) dinner.

It was a long day, fully scheduled, but not hectic. It would have been nice to spend more time everywhere, but...(next time)

The next morning, Ulla & Peter Chudziak served a sumptuous breakfast at their beautiful home. With our full stomachs, we took a 45 minute walking tour of downtown Lingen (left).

PictureNorbert's ship and train collection.
Thursday, June 2: On our way to Bislich, we stopped in Münster to see, where Matti Bröcher produces all the wonderful Rhenania Jr models, and many, many more. Our first impression: how can he be producing all this in such a small room. But the output is perfect (below left).

In Bislich, Norbert Bröcher (Rhenania) was waiting for us with coffee, tea and homemade cake. After a 1 1/2 hour discussion of the state of the 1250 hobby (quite interesting, when switching back and forth between German and English), Norbert had prepared a special presentation about the local area: In March of 1945, this area was the battle field for Operation Varsity, where the 9th US Army and the 17th US Airborne crossed the river Rhine successfully. Among all other resources, they used 1300 gliders for this mission.
Norbert showed us on maps and in books the local areas and buildings from this time, and then we took a 1 hour car tour of the actual area today. If I would have been driving through, without Norbert's guidance, I would have never imagined all that took place here.

For dinner, we went to the Fährhaus, overlooking the Rhine, with great food (and deserts), thus concluding another very interesting and informative day (below center, right).

**************************************************************************************************

Friday, June 3: Bislich to Amsterdam is only a 90 minute trip. So we got to Amsterdam early and checked into another beautiful, but reasonably priced hotel at the outskirts: Hotel Casa 400.
After an unplanned tour of downtown Amsterdam (too much construction sent our GPS into a circle), we visited the Rijksmuseum with its beautiful display of historical paintings.
For dinner we met Peter and Mariana van Staalduinen at Pasta & Basta. Great Italian dishes, and the wait staff doubles as singing entertainment. From there, we took a candlelight grachten tour with wine & cheese.
**************************************************************************************************

Saturday, June 4: Every 1st. Saturday of the month, the Dutch Ship Collector Club (DSCC) meets in a restaurant at the site, where the DELFT is being rebuilt, in Rotterdam. The DSCC Chairman, Peter van Stalduinen, had invited us to join them for the June meeting, and that led eventually to him and Rob Tas joining our SMSC European tour. The DSCC has an interesting core group of members, and we enjoyed being part of the proceedings.

The DELFT is being built, just like 200 years ago. The oak wood has to be cut out of trees that have grown "bent". Construction started in 2003, and will probably take another 10+ years to complete (below).

Picture Liner Rotterdam at AllOnScale.
After a typical Dutch lunch courtesy of the DSCC, we went to AllOnScale - Exact Exceptional Model Building. Here they produce beautiful ship models in large scale, down to 1:1000. I think discussions are on the way for a 1250 model.

                                                                *  *  *

For the finish of our trip, Peter van Staalduinen had promised us an Indonesian buffet, prepared by himself in his nice house in Purmerend,  near Amsterdam. He surprised us all with an exceptional selection of traditional foods-I have been to Indonesia many times, so I know. Thank you, Mariana & Peter, for making the conclusion of our trip another highlight.

Peter also has a very interesting collection of 1250 models. He got started with Triang, and now he has an almost complete set of Nordzee's (below).
Our tour was perfect in every aspect: a great group of collectors experiencing new highlights every day for 12 days. Our local hosts everywhere were fantastic. They helped with the planning of the trip--1 year in the making. They were gracious hosts that helped along every step of the way. They took the time to be with us all day.

San Francisco 2007

On Saturday, March 31, 2007, Paul Jacobs and Chris Daley organized the first formal West Coast Collectors Meeting on board the Liberty Ship S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien in San Francisco.   Attendees were able to tour the ship and observe a war game staged by several of the collectors present.  Chris Daley's 1250Ships offered a range of the latest release models for sale and several participants took out tables for exhibits and second-hand model sales.  Though it was a Kassel year, several producers including Rudi and Egbert Kraus (Navis/Neptun), Dave Love (Mountford), Paul Jacobs (SMY), Norbert and Matti Broecher (Rhenania), Chris Daley (California/1250Ships), John Eagan (Eagan Ship Models) and John Youngerman were present.  The following afternoon many of the attendees enjoyed an open house at Paul and Renee Jacobs' home in nearby Saratoga.

New York 2006

The 2006 East Coast Collectors Meeting was the third to be held at the at the Maritime Industry Museum, on the campus of the New York State University Maritime College, Ft. Schuyler, Bronx, New York.   Like previous meetings, this coincided with New York's "Fleet Week" and was held on May 25-27, 2006.  The most ambitious program yet, the weekend began with a cruise and an informal tour around New York and the Fleet Week ships, followed by a dinner sponsored by MSM at Tosca's on Thursday.  On Friday, a series of panel lectures and discussions began with John Olsen's slide show on conversions of early cage mast U.S. pre-dreadnoughts, followed by Chris Daley's discussion of digital photography techniques, Dave Shadell's insights into his research on U.S. WWII naval camouflage, and John Eagan's presentation of various tips and pointers on scratch building.  George Elder concluded with his take on the state of the hobby.  Friday's awards dinner in the campus dining room concluded with the presentation of awards to Rudi Kraus of Navis-Neptun and Robert DeVlam of Noordzee Models(in absentia).  Saturday's model show was the best attended yet, and several of those remaining on campus traveled to Philadelphia on Sunday to visit battleship New Jersey and cruiser Olympia.

New York 2005

The second East Coast Collectors Meeting was held again at the Maritime Industry Museum on the SUNY Maritime College campus, Fort Schuyler, Bronx, New York on May 20-21, 2005.  Once more, organizer Tom Haughton brought collectors, model dealers and producers together for two days of lectures, discussions and social events, culminating in the model show on Saturday. Again, many of the attendees spent the weekend at the College's dormitory rooms and combined sightseeing and navy Week ship visits with the weekend's model related events.  Joining model producers Rudi and Egbert Kraus (Navis/Neptun) and Chris Daley (1250Ships), who returned from last year, were Alain Picouet (Quadrant), Paul Jacobs (SMY) and John Youngerman.  Friday's Symposia included talks on naval camouflage, rigging miniature sailing ships and rapid prototyping, followed by a dinner at Tosca's restaurant.

New York 2004

The first East Coast Collectors Meeting was organized by ship model collector Tom Haughton at his Alma Mater, the New York State University Maritime College, Fort Schuyler, Bronx, New York, on May 21-22, 2004.   At Tom's invitation, collectors, model dealers and producers, many of whom spent the weekend at the College's dormitory rooms, met each other for the very first time at the Maritime Industry Museum.  The program included informative lectures and discussions on naval history, model production, camouflage and other related subjects on the first day (Friday) and an exhibit and sales event on the second day (Saturday), after which participants enjoyed an informal dinner at nearby Tosca's Restaurant.  Since the meeting coincided with New York's Navy Week, a number of participants prolonged their stay for an extra day for sightseeing and ship visits.
